      Fearing Fear Part 1
How to use Fear to be L33t Hax0r: Part 1

Fear. Most people are intimidated by Bungie's tag editor Fear in much the same way they are intimidated by the homework assignments in an especially hard math class, or the way they're intimidated when staring down the barrel of a loaded Browning machine gun.

Well, Fear not! (erm...bad pun not intended.) Because I am going to help you out and introduce you to the wonderful world of "Hax0ring". With any luck (or none at all), you'll someday be able to join the ranks of us fearers who work for mapmaking groups, and become the "L33t Hax0rer", the person who makes the cool new attacks for new units look good and work good.

But one step at a time.

Tutorial #1: Overkill

Many times you may have been playing Myth and watched Soulblighter mercilessly axe down your men. You may have asked yourself "why can't _I_ have that phat bastard?" Well, you can! just follow these simple steps:

1. Open up "Units", then open up "Warrior".
2. If you don't see either of these anywhere, try double-clicking on the Fear icon.
3. If you don't see FEAR anywhere, try doing a custom install and installing it.
4. Once you've checked and done steps 2 and 3, repeat step 1.

OK! That was painless, wasn't it? Too bad you haven't done anything yet!

The Unit tags are a very simple type of tag, probably about the most simple there is. There are two popup menus, one for the Monster that the tag points to, and one for the Collection Reference that is used to determine the monster's coloration. Loathing uses Unit tags, not Monster tags, which is convenient, as we shall see shortly.

From the Monster popup menu, choose "Soulblighter". The Collection Reference menu will now change to "None". Choose one of the few choices available there, unless you want your Soulblighters to have neon green pants.

That's it. From now on, any map you play that had warriors on it will have the warriors replaced with Soulblighters. And you shall kick the enemy, who is too stupid to tremble before your might.

WHAT DID I JUST DO?

Loathing uses Unit tags, as stated before, instead of Monster tags. By changing the Monster value in the tag, you effectively told Loathing that Soulblighter is associated with the unit tag. You could open up Soulblighter's unit tag and make him a Warrior using the same method. And then the level would be over almost before it began, because anybody knows that a Warrior sucks. That's why you made them all Soulblighters, isn't it?

Important bit of info: if you ever want to change a tag back to it's original "Bungified" state, simply open your local folder in your Myth II folder, find the tag you want to revert, and delete it. then apply a little antiseptic.

There are so many tags in Fear, and some of the tag types may seem confusing. (Understatement mb?) As much as a lot of us don't think we need to, I recomend consulting the Bungie documentation whenever you have a question...while it doesn't go into super detail, it IS very thorough.

Got a type of tag you just can't figure out? I'll probably be happy to review it in Part 2 of this article, whenever that is. Actually, I won't be happy to review it, but I'll review it anyway. Send requests to joyeuse@hot-shot.com, or ask me about it if you see me online.
